Vance’s Story: Live It Up Hairdressing (Pt. 2)
Vance’s Story
We are a young, soon-to-be-married couple who had very little knowledge about running a business when we opened our hairdressing salon. And like most in that situation, all we really had going for us at the time was loads of enthusiasm.
We were eager to give it a go, work hard and do whatever it took to succeed.
And, so far so good. Or should I say, so far so typical. We found the going tough.
Our business was going very slowly, and we were doing all the work, yet there was no profit.
The business settled down with, on average, 240 customers bringing in $2,300 a week. To make matters worse, when another hairdresser opened up only 20m down the road, needless to say, we were more than a little unsure about our future.
The Moment Of Truth
Fortunately, we were willing to do anything to ensure the business’ success, so I went and got work as a builder’s laborer to bring in much needed cashflow. I also attended one of Brad Sugars’ seminars.
It was there that I realized the importance of getting professional help, and filled in a form to make contact with one of Brad’s ActionCOACH Business Coaches.
We wanted the business to improve. You see, while sales were running at $2,300 a week, we had very little in the way of consistent marketing strategies, our team communication was very low and there were no key performance indicators.
But we did have some goals, which were to:
• Increase sales from approximately $2,300 to $3,000 a week within 6-months.
• Set up a good business structure or system.
• Increase marketing strategies.
• Obtain a better understanding of business.
• Enable me to quit my outside job.
• Purchase another hairdressing business.
All the ingredients were in place to begin working ON the business in earnest. We had come to the realization that things just had to improve. We also were able to recognize our shortcomings.
We lacked motivation and vision at times. This, I know, is a common problem faced by many in business today. We also weren’t accountable to anyone. Again, a common problem. You see, because you’re running your own show usually means you don’t have anyone to answer to, except yourself. Now many, shall I say, less experienced business owners will know that this isn’t an advantage at all – it can be a huge disadvantage.
This is where the Business Coach comes in. In our case, we went ahead and hired an ActionCOACH.
